Tips on DataStarWeb

Try some of these tips to assist in your DataStarWeb searching:

1. Choose several databases at a time in the beginning of your search and search them together. Remember you don't have to start with only one database and then repeat the search.

2. Thesaurus Mapping makes finding search terms easy. It is available in medical and engineering databases. Just click the labeled button to see a list of appropriate terms to add to your search.

3. Try sorting your DataStarWeb Alerts by Number, Database or Folder.

4. Dialog eLinks now provide access to over 12,000 sources and include access through Alerts in XML and TAG formats.

5. Highlight search terms in DataStarWeb in one of 11 colors for quick visual recognition. Colored terms appear on the Titles page, Document page, Print Preview page and in documents saved in HTML or PDF format.

Tailor Information to Meet Your Needs with Custom Solutions

Custom Solutions provide specialized content delivery applications, created to integrate or deliver Dialog content into intranets, extranets and portals. Information needs are changing and becoming more complex in most organizations. For example, the marketing department needs more focused competitive intelligence, while the research and development group is more interested in intellectual property. And both groups want easier ways to retrieve their respective data. Like many organizations, your information needs are unique and you need a solution that offers flexible pricing and delivery. Perhaps it's time to consider a custom solution to meet your diverse information needs.

A custom solution from is as simple as adding a search form to your company's intranet or as complex as building a complex, customized solution from scratch. Perhaps you have multiple solutions from multiple services; Custom Solutions can consolidate these solutions into one central point for information access.

Dialog's custom solutions specialists work with you to identify appropriate content from the vast Dialog or DataStar collections to ensure your organization retains the precision searching that Dialog is respected for within the information community.

How Custom Solutions Development Works

There are four basic steps to the planning and development process:

  • Identify content requirements — The most appropriate sources from DataStar and Dialog's comprehensive content set are identified.
  • Identify user requirements and search strategies — Users who need direct access to information and the types of enquiries they will make, including commonly asked questions and standard searches, are identified
  • Identify delivery routes and access methods — Several methods can be used to deliver relevant information, including simple-to-use search forms for the databases; and "hot topics" so that users can point and click to get answers to frequently-asked questions. They can also look at items that need updating regularly through automatic Alerts.
  • Integration into the enterprise — Once content and user requirements are identified, the solution is integrated with the corporate information system using Dialog's Intranet Toolkit and Customized DataStar modules.

The completed custom solution once the system is set up provides end users with seamless access through their enterprise information system into the power of Dialog. For more information about setting up a custom solution for your organization, contact your account representative.

DataStar Functionality Enhancements

Enhancements to the Dialog eLinks Manager on DataStar

The Dialog eLinks Manager now provides the option to name link categories and group links by category. Previously, the Dialog eLinks Manager presented all links in one long list. These enhancements allow administrators to more easily manage links and define the text that should be displayed for each group. Currently, these enhancements are applicable only in the DataStar platform.

Specific changes include:

  • Customize the appearance of eLinks so that they always appear on the top of documents for all online and offline formats, except for ResearchSoft (RIS)
  • Offer an eLinks image in offline PDF format (before text only)
  • Provide a "show links" link for HTML display when there are images and several groups of links

Check the eLinks Quick Tour on DataStarWeb for detailed information about how to use eLinks.

Large DataStar Alerts and DELIVERs to be Sent Via Download Link

DataStar Alerts and DELIVERs producing output larger than 2 MB are now being delivered through download links inserted in e-mails. This change assists some customers who were unable to receive output larger than 2 MB, mainly due to customer mailbox size restrictions.
