Find Patent Licensing Information in Dialog’s Business Files?

TOPIC: Patent, trademark and copyright searchers should remember to consult databases outside the usual scope of Dialog's Intellectual Property content. Using Dialog's business databases, users can often find information on licensing agreements, litigation, patent pending technology, and statistical information.

While INPADOC/Family and Legal Status (File 345) may indicate a patent licensing agreement, Business & Industry (File 9) may offer more details on such arrangements and may give information on agreements not covered by INPADOC. This “How Do I…?” shows ways to use indexing tools in File 9 to find late-breaking news in the trade press about companies’ patents and licensing agreements.

Additional business databases with daily updates covering company and industry news include Gale Group PROMT® (File 16), ABI/INFORM® (File 15), Gale Group Trade & Industry Database (File 148), Dialog Global Reporter (File 20) and Dialog NewsRoom (File 990). Each database has its own specialized descriptors and fields, such as the Concept Term (CT=) field in File 9, and the Event Name (EN=) field in File 16.

All of these databases provide Descriptor fields (/DE) that allow you to run term searches using proximity connectors. A good strategy is to search terms in the Descriptor (/DE) OR the Title (/TI) fields (/TI,DE). For example, S LICEN?(4N)AGREEMENT?/TI,DE AND ASTRAZENECA?

    TEXT:
    North Carolina, USA-based Targacept, a clinical-stage firm
developing a new class of drugs known as Neuronal Nicotinic
Receptors Therapeutics, says that Anglo-Swedish drug major
AstraZeneca has secured an option for an exclusive license
to its product candidate TC-5619 under the terms of the
parties' collaboration agreement. As a result, AstraZeneca
will make a $2.0 million payment to Targacept.

NNRs are a class of receptors found in the nervous system that
play a critical role in modulating the release of chemicals
called neurotransmitters to regulate nervous system activity.
The alpha7 NNR subtype has been shown in animal studies to be
a key regulator of cognitive function. TC-5619, the lead
product candidate in Targacept's alpha7 NNR program, entered
Phase I clinical development in July 2007. The parties'
expansion of their collaboration to include TC-5619 reflects
the potential of the alpha7 NNR as a therapeutic target for
cognitive disorders.

"Our decision to secure an option to license TC-5619 under
our collaboration agreement underscores AstraZeneca's
enthusiasm for the promise of NNRs as a new mechanism for
the treatment of cognitive disorders," said Bob Holland,
vice president and head of the neuroscience therapy area
at AstraZeneca. "We are committed to developing novel
therapies in areas of unmet need such as Alzheimer's
disease, cognitive deficits in schizophrenia and other
cognitive disorders and are delighted to be able to access
Targacept's innovation in this field," he added.
