Connect Time Quick Reference

Effective January 1, 2002, Dialog Customers will have a choice of the pricing method for the search component of their online searching: connect-time or DialUnits. The two choices are fundamentally different ways of measuring search activity. Connect time, as the name implies, literally measures and charges based upon the amount of time you are connected to a database — irrespective of what you are doing (actively searching, using help commands, browsing, or answering the phone). DialUnits measures the amount of CPU processing required by each command — essentially how much effort the Dialog computers take to process your search commands. While DialUnits have worked well for many of our customers, other customers preferred the connect-time option. We’ve decided that the best way to serve our customers is to let them make the choice of the pricing method they prefer.

The Choices

Option Measurement Charges
Connect-time Amount of time spent in a particular file From the time a searcher BEGINs in a file until the file is exited
DialUnits Amount of work Dialog’s computers do to process requests Only when executing a command that incurs DialUnits (i.e., not HELP commands, etc.)

Which is Better?

The answer depends on each individual searcher. Because DialUnits and connect time measure search activity in different ways, an individual’s search style is the primary factor in selecting a pricing method. As a general rule, a person who is on and off the system quickly will benefit from connect-time pricing. For example experienced searchers who can plan their search in advance may prefer connect-time pricing. Searchers who like to browse while online and have "thinking time" may prefer to use DialUnits, which would not "charge" during that time. For example, DialUnits can be a more cost-effective method of researching when you expect to spend a significant amount of time online reviewing search results or engaging in other similar activities.

The table below shows six fairly common searches with the DialUnits used in the search, the amount charged and the equivalent amount of time you would have to run the search under connect-time for the same cost.

How do I switch?

The default mode is DialUnits. You select to use the connect-time option by entering a line into your Dialog profile: SET CONNECT ON. After you save the changes and logoff, the change will be in effect the next time you log into the service. For help setting up a profile, Dialog has created a Dialog Profile Quick Reference Card or contact our Knowledge Center.

For additional information about the connect-time option, please contact Dialog’s Knowledge Center at 800-334-2564 () or contact your local sales representative.
