Use the Chemical checklist to help you organize your search data.

If you want chemical information, ask yourself some questions to get started.

  1. What type of information do I want?
    • Specific chemical?
    • Class of chemicals?

  2. Where will I find the information?
    • Chemical handbooks or dictionaries?
    • Peer-reviewed citations?
    • Review or overview information?
    • Patent information?
    • Chemical business information?

  3. What type of information do I already have?
    • A Name – trade name, generic or common name, systematic names, class name, CAS® Registry Number?

    • Molecular Structure – molecular formula, element count, structural formula?

    • Physical Properties – boiling point, melting point, molecular weight, solubility, dissociation constant, density, vapor pressure, etc.?

    • Subject Categories – safety and toxicology, regulatory, synthesis and production, supplier or manufacturer, patent and legal, engineering, pharmaceutical?
