Using ERASM with the Classic Dialog DataStar System

ERA (Electronic Redistribution and Archiving) guarantees copyright clearance for copying and storage of documents retrieved from Dialog DataStar. Royalties are automatically paid to the copyright owner via The Dialog Corporation.

You can apply ERA rights either at the time you make or store the copies, or afterwards.

Checking terms and conditions

Copyright terms and conditions vary among information providers. To check these, call up the BASE database and enter the command TERMS-AND-CONDITIONS for an alphabetical list of databases, along with their terms and conditions.

Most databases participate in the ERA service. Where ERA is not available for a certain database, you should contact the information provider directly for permission to distribute or store copies of search results.

Using ERA at the time of making or storing copies:

Use the REDIST command to redistribute copies of documents to colleagues, and the ARCHIVE command to electronically store information in your company's in-house system.

The REDIST and ARCHIVE commands are used in conjunction with the ..PRINT, ..PRINTOFF, ..ALERT, ..DELIVER instruction, as follows:

Example:
..print long 1-10 redist = 5
..print long 1-10 archive = 20
..alert long 1-10 redist = 5
..printoff 1-10 redist = 5
..deliver archive = 30

The number specified after REDIST or ARCHIVE is the number of people to whom you intend to redistribute or to whom you are providing electronic archive access.

Using ERA after you have made or stored the copies:

The Dialog DataStar ERA feature also provides an option to report additional copies or archival rights after your initial request. This "after-the-fact" feature allows you to record information about records you have copied or archived any time after the original output is delivered.

Apply ERA in the following way:

  1. Enter your Account database (ACCT)
  2. Select option 6: Apply ERA rights
  3. Enter database name and supply answers to the prompted questions

Pricing

When you use the REDIST or ARCHIVE options, standard Dialog DataStar prices are incurred by the format designated and the output command used. These are then multiplied by a multiplier which is determined by the number of copies requested.

The ARCHIVE and REDIST option have different multiplier tables. Use the ..PRICE command to see the multiplier tables for both the REDIST and the ARCHIVE commands.

ERA price is: Format cost x pricing multiplier
